Milan is the fashion capital of the world. This is the place where it all happens because the city revolves around fashion and great design. In Milan, the biggest offense you can commit is having an imitation purse. This is the reason why people who want to learn about fashion often dream about attending a fashion school in Milan, but the idea of living in Italy for years can be intimidating–not to mention expensive. That is why designers should consider an intensive, summer program instead.

So what can an up and coming fashion designer hope to gain from summer school in Milan?

1) Experience – Being in the center of the fashion capital means that you have the chance to see your education in action. You have a chance to see just how fashion works in the real world. Experience is something that you truly need when you want to be the best at something. Is New York the Last Fashion Capital of the World With a Functioning Garment District?

If one looks only at the Western World, Europe inevitably predates the US in the establishment of a garment industry. In the UK, whereas textile production became industrialized in Northern England during the industrial revolution, the garment industry remained very firmly in London. The East End Rag Trade became iconic in the early 20th Century, populated by immigrants who settled from Eastern Europe to ply their trade. Paris also saw a major growth spurt around the same time in an industry formalized back in the 1840s. By the turn of the 20th Century, up to 300,000 workers were beavering in garment production, where Le Marais was arguably the epicenter of immigrant workshops. In Milan, the relatively high concentration of retail designers stores isn’t quite matched by manufacturers, who now seem located in a diffuse pattern around Lombardy.

In New York, as in Europe, garment manufacture migrated from a home task to a mechanized industry in the mid 19th century. And the workers were, by necessity, immigrants. The same diaspora from Eastern Europe, but also Italians, came to New York where the sidewalks were apparently paved with gold. What distinguished New York is that the area of design and production was well delineated, and whereas European production suffered a severe set back during the 1929 crisis and the second world war, New York merely suffered a hiccup but thrived thereafter, obviously taking share from the war ravaged cities of Europe.

The Garment District grew and is claimed to have had its hey day in the 1970s. As Meghana Gandhi, Assistant Director of Fashion and Retail Team at the New York City Economic Development Corporation, commented, “The main hurdle is external. [After the ’70s] the cost of production overseas diminished… and drove big designers to produce abroad.”

Perhaps there is something ironic and plaintive to the closing lyrics sung originally by Liza Minnelli in the 1977 Martin Scorsese film “New York, New York” when re-framed in a garment manufacturing context. “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere, Come on come through, New York, New York..”

Whereas New York was once the center of production, it had been demoted to a testing lab and launch point for outsourcing to other (and cheaper) centers of production. Garments were being made less and less in New York New York but merely were “come on and come through”.

In 2010, the mayor’s office and some grass roots designer cooperatives kicked off Fashion NYC 2020, a program to determine how to foster growth within the fashion industry. There was the Fashion Manufacturing Initiative, and the recognition that a less price-sensitive industry, removed from fast fashion, could emerge from the ashes.

I have made New York my home for design, production and distribution over the last couple of decades. There are just huge advantages in having all steps of the garment process in one central location when making small scale boutique and exclusive product. Many entrepreneurs like myself continue to produce in the canyons of Broadway and the Garment District in New York – for me, it’s an historical legacy that is stitched onto every piece of lingerie I make.

Which Is The Capital Of Fashion?

Fashion is all around us and no matter if we like watching the fashion shows on TV or simply look in glossy magazines, we are surrounded by it. In many capitals of the world fashion is an important subject and one of the major concerns for young girls (and not only them!). But where exactly is the capital of Fashion?

This is an ongoing battle between the most famous capitals that also hold some of the famous Fashion Weeks. If last year the top places in the chart where occupied by Milan, New York, Paris, Rome and London, this year according to the Global Language Monitor’s annual global survey things have changed dramatically. The state of the financial environment has also affected the fashion industry just like anything else. The fashion shows were still abundant, the catwalks were still crowded but the fashion buzz was a lot dimmer.

This year’s top ten fashion capitals of the world include (1 through 10):

Milano – The city that managed to overtake New York but also some other important cities on the fashion radar such as Rome and Paris.

New York – After five years when it occupied the first position, being the world’s capital of fashion, NY was overtaken by Milano this year.

Paris – Even if most fashionistas consider Paris to be the all time capital of fashion, the media has another opinion this is why the city only occupies a decent number 3.

Rome – The city where fashion meets the Italian beauty and the place where women don’t go outside without make-up, Rome still hold strong at number 4.

London – Despite the bad weather and bad food, London still remains in Top 5 fashion capitals of the world. The British fashion icons put a strong fight so that is remains here.

Los Angeles – The place where the sun shines all year long and where girls have fashion contests to see which one is better dressed, The city of Angels is situated this year at number 6.

Hong Kong – With a different culture, that we sometimes have difficulties understanding, Hong Kong is the number one fashion capital in the Asia/Pacific ( leaping over Tokyo ) and number 7 in the World Wide chart.

Sao Paolo – The beauty of the Brazilian girls and the fashion tastes has made Sao Paolo rise remarkably and take the lead in the Latin-American scene.

Sydney – The Australian delicate beauty surely helped as Sydney is still in Top Ten while Melbourne sinks dramatically.

Las Vegas – The hot dessert, the celebrities and the continuous media spotlight makes Las Vegas occupy the tenth position in this fashion chart.

New York Is Leading the Fashion Trends This Fall

Last month, a New York-based nonprofit organization, Global Language Monitor, launched an annual survey for the biggest fashion city. New York beat Milan this year, becoming the world’s first fashion capital. From 2004 to 2008, New York was reelected five times the winner of the charts, but in the last year, Milan, broken the monopoly of New York, thus ranking on top. This year, New York came back again, showing a glimmer of hope to the sagging U.S. economy. It is also providing the opportunity for everyone to look there for the newest fashion elements this coming fall.

New York: the new capital for fashion trend

Early in the 17th century, Dutch settlers, who came to North America to find a new paradise, started at New York as a brilliant place. Presently, New York still seems just like old time fashion capital. In fact, before World War II, New York designers were still slavishly imitating the great masters of Europe, Paris and London. Back then, New York was just a follower. The European fashion industry suffered a fatal blow during World War II. Famous Chanel (Chanel) boutiques were forced to close all their stores. Now, American designers have become “independent” and are finding their own fashion direction. Thus, the timing of the formation of the New York style is finally mature.

World War II, with the U.S. economy’s growth in strength, brought the gradual industrialization of the garment industry, the emergence of a group of talented designers made patterns and styles which changed in the world. New York stood out as the world forefront of fashion trends.

2004 was the first year of five consecutive years New York was voted to be the capital city of fashion trends. Each year the world’s top buyers, fashion designers, magazine editors, models, makeup artists, stylists, etc. gathered in New York Week with Beiqiyuehan Johnson (Betsey Johnson), Ralph Lauren (Ralph Lauren), Calvin Klein (Calvin Klein) as well as many other famous designers for a designer fashion show. This fashion shows brought in the total of approximately $ 253 million revenue for New York City.
